This is a lovely little doll's quilt mae by Sue in our Saturday class. The puffs are 1/4 inches across - tiny, tiny. And - Sue is a busy working lady. Where does she find the time.

This is Leela (Tuesday night class) - her specialty is 1/4 inch hexagons and diamonds - all paper pieced. Her work in always beautiful - she frames her work in white frames and they look amazing.

Pop-up Books

One of my favourite things from childhood was a beautiful pop up book of Sleeping Beauty. I can still recall the pages, but the one that stays with me is Sleeping Beauty asleep waiting for the prince. It was a beautiful pop up with lots of pink roses tumbling down above her, over the castle walls, and rambling along the ground. I wish I still had that book.

But we didn't realise that we had to keep everything - that one day it would again be fashionable, or is it just that we get a little nostalgic? Does it mean I don't throw out all my clothes that are too small?? Not that I think I will every fit into them ever again (big sigh) - no matter how hard we try, we will never again have our girlish figures of our youth (another big sigh). Now I'm depressing myself........ Let's look at the pretty picture and cheer up.

UFOs - finished - hurrah!!

We all have UFOs - our minds work overtime (well mine does) while working on one project, we are already thinking of that project we saw in a magazine, or dreamed up in our heads, or that wonderful new fabric we saw (or bought). But how to finish them all.... Have surgery and 6-8 weeks of taking it easy!!

This table centre is made from jelly rolls, and I had been putting off doing the binding. Finally took the bull by the horns and added pink binding (cut on the cross to make it easier) and am really glad of the finished product. Looks good in the kitchen..... I have been working on this painting since attending a workshop with Chris Whipper a few months ago. No chance to finish it - but now I think it is finished. I have enjoyed the journey, and look forward to hubby framing this piece. It is quite large and we have lots of really old large skirting boards which I love using for framing - they are white, chipped and cracked but look amazing as frames for paintings.

This teapot was a workshop piece at a conference I attended last year (yes not finished) and all it needed was oiling to seal it. It's done!

Well, I still have a few to go, but having to take it easy for awhile I have been able to finish a few. Know what's good about this? I can start NEW ones!!

I hope this blogger - Elizabeth Scott - doesn't mind me using her photo but I found this to be just out of this world. I wish my stash was so organised. I try so hard to keep both home and the shop organised with my stashes but when you go looking for something, fabric goes flying in all directions.

I can't tell you how many times a customer has come in looking for a particular colour, and I end up fossicing through my own stash 'cause I know I have the right colour in there. Mind you, there are some I will not part with for anything, and these are the ones I can't cut up. Isn't that awful to think you buy this fabric because you love it so and then the only thing you can do with it is walk around with it and pat it........ is anyone else like this??

Is this a little like hubby buys great tools and leaves them in the box unused????

New Look

I love trying out new headers and backgrounds for my blog. The only problem is that there are so many clever people out there with all these fabulous free backgrounds, I have trouble deciding on which one to use.

I think I am happy with the way THE VINTAGE PATCH SHOP has turned out. But who knows - being a Gemini it may change twice a day... LOL.

Being home, I have made friends with all our wonderful feathered wildlife here in the mountains. Some are friendly, some remote and one in particular - our white cockatoo- is cheeky, greedy and bossy. He torments Toby (our dog) by perching on the railing and walking up and down making noises and flapping his wings at him. Keeps Toby amused though.

The parrots and pigeons are lovely. They fight a little, especially the rosellas, but work it out in the end.

I love watching them, and they are used to me now and don't scatter when I put fresh feed out for them. Aren't they lovely?

After covering my desk, I decided to give a few things in my craft room a face lift. As pink is the colour of the moment with me (never used to like it), I decided to paint my storage cabinet which sits atop a book case laden with projects all filed and waiting to be started - one day hopefully not to far away..

Then - I had some pink gingham left over from the French Hatbox range of fabrics - just enough to cover a little stand I had and it matches my desk perfectly. Hubby is starting to think I'll be asking him to repaint the room shortly. It's painted Russet Pear which is a lovely dirty soft green and I do like it this colour. So he is safe. Although, the spare room could do with a redo!!

Having time off recuperating has really recharged the batteries - I've enjoyed being at home doing little things like my craft room, organising shelves, getting rid of sTuFf that has been hanging around since they invented the wheel, and is no longer useful. How our taste changes... It will be nice to get back to the shop though and see customers, get some sewing done, and see the world again!

Raw Edge Applique

Try this - it's fun.

It seems to be the all the rage at the moment, and I thought I would give it a go. Well - it was fun and I can't wait to make something else using this technique.

I had some jelly roll strips left over from a quilt-as-you-go project and thinking I had better do something with them, decided to make a bed runner. But how to make it? Quilter's Companion here in Australia has been giving away free DVDs on different techniques, and having just purchased the current issue, the DVD included was on free motion quilting and raw edge applique. Well - I shouldn't have watched it - wanted to try it there and then....

So here are photos of the finished project. The applique circles have wadding on the underside and were carefully pinned in place as I didn't want to use a fusable webbing because it may have made it too stiff and I wanted them nice and soft. The circles I used as tassels were padded with two layers of wadding. Fun and quick to make.

The runner looks great on the end of a bed with nice white fluffy doonas.

Good coffee, beautiful day, good company

Hubby dear took me out for coffee and breakfast (brunch really) at 'dmF emporium and Cafe'. They are on the highway at Warrimoo - one of the little towns in the Blue Mountains just down the road from Springwood. It was the first time we had been there, and we had been wanting to go for some time and were glad we did. It was lovely coffee and food. We sat outside in the sunshine and enjoyed ourselves.

Lots of lovely gifts and very retro... The girls tell me that the area upstairs will be a Retro shop shortly. Can't wait.

Then next door is a lovely little retro/vintage shop called Robin's Nest. Great for a browse and spending a little money.... Hate going there !! (purse is empty afterwards)

There is always a lot to see and buy..

I just happen to be a sucker for old lace, ribbons and buttons. One day I will figure out what I will do with my stash. But for now I will just look after it, take it out every so often and drool...

Modge Podge and Toile

Having not a lot to do right now, I decided my craft table needed a face lift. It was looking a little worse for wear with all the painting etc and I had been wanting to try Modge Podge fabric on wood for awhile - so found some lovely pink toile (at my shop of course) which would go lovely with the room - a jar of Modge Podge fabric and off I went.

It turned out lovely. Quite easy to apply, I put one coat of Modge Podge on part of the table as I went - I thought that if I did the whole table at once it would dry before I could apply the fabric. I brushed Modge Podge on the fabric top as I went and hey presto!! The edges of the table were easy, as were the corners. I did another coat when this was all dry, and it is now washable.

So if you come to my house - don't stand still too long. You will be Modged.......

I have a thing for old photos.. I just love browsing through all those blogs that have photos of families from the past.

Our family on my mother's side, have had a book published on our family dating back to way back when. It's called - Down Memory Lane. Our original family name was Lane and the book is so interesting. Unfortunately, there were no royal families, or duchesses, or such. Plain old everyday people. Still very interesting.

When you are at home recuperating and bored silly 'cause you can't do anything due to a stupid hysterectomy - you do things like read through all the help stuff on Blogs - I just found out I have comments that I didn't answer s0 to all those people, SORRY, SORRY.
Don't you just feel dumb that a simple thing like that was missed!!??

Also - I have closed down our website for the Vintage Patch. It was getting too hard with our web lady moving away and trying to keep up - so I will use the blog instead.......

Grandma's Quilt

Unfortunately, this does not belong to my grandmother - it belong's to Gail's grandmother-in-law - Gail belongs to our Tuesday Sewing group at the shop. This was given to her by a member of her husband's family - it was found in the back of a cupboard.

I forgot to put my hand or something in the photo to show a true indication of the size of the yo yos - suffolk puffs as they would have been called back then. The size of each yo yo is 1/4" - tiny tiny little things. Tiny little stitches, and just a pleasure to see. We all treated it with reverence (and wanted it for ourselves). Gail thinks it is over 100 years old. Amazing to think of someone sitting and sewing these.... quite moments and thoughts imagined while the sewing was done.

This is the back of the quilt - the size is 36" x 36".

Holiday

This is the view from the verandah of the little cottage we stayed in at Christmas - Culburra Beach. Our own steps to the beach, lots of sun, walking and rest. It was lovely. My husband Roger was amazed I agreed to go away for a holiday - but we could take our dog, Toby, and that was what persuaded me.... he loved the beach too...... It was amazing - beautiful scenery from our 50s style cottage, little bunnies playing on the grass and - did I mention rest?

Well - I'm back after months of hard work and being so tired I haven't had time to do anything much ....

New background - that's a start. Have been working so hard trying to get new things up for all the classes at our shop - both in the patchwork and decorative painting. So this means new projects and not only making them, but instructions as well. This is a picture of our art class project by Linda Lock - great decorative artist from Canada. I met her at the Quilt Show in Darling Harbour in July and she was lovely - her work is such an inspiration.

Hexagon Magic - hooked!

Sold my painting of Parisian Lady this week - I will miss it, but she has gone to a good home - Veronica is a good mum. So now to work on the next project. Or will I get on with my hexagons - I think the last count was 250, and still a long way to go. I'm making this quilt with Lecien Antique Roses range and it is looking lovely. Can't wait 'til it is finished (5 years??).

Here is a preview of the new workshop piece to be held in a few months. I'm still working on two pieces for the Mountains and Rivers Folk and Decorative Art Association - they have a conference in Orange for 3 days every May and hopefully I will be teaching these pieces. There will be so many talented ladies attending - not only teaching but pupils. It will be my first. I'm looking forward to the party on Saturday night celebrating their 10th Birthday....

In the meantime, there is the Springwood Quilt Show - held each year in April (Anzac weekend for three days) at Springwood High School here in the Blue Mountains. There are over 250 quilts on display, a raffle quilt by Chris Jurd, lots of shops (me included) and a wonderful cafe run by the students. It's a fun time for everyone and I always spend too much money.

Jane will be entering her quilt New York Beauty (from a pattern by Chris Jurd) in the show. There is a picture here - and it is wonderful.

Busy Times

Finally - a chance to add something to my blog. Times have been very busy with home and business. Lots of rain (thank goodness) and the weeds are growing way too fast for my liking. Fortunately though, all the azaleas and camelias have loved it.

The sad news is the rain didn't move south to ease the situation with the Victorian fires. It is so hard to imagine what it would be like to lose everything you love and have cherished over the years to be gone in a moment. I think everyone has felt deep sorrow for these people. Even more so with the loss of lives. Makes all the mundane little everyday worries seem so unimportant.

The workshop I held for the Parisian Lady (see photo) is now over - what a wonderful day. I still find it surprising to see how different all the pieces turn out. Now to work on the next workshop piece -

New Projects

I've added a photo of a birdhouse Roger (hubby) has just finished. I asked if he could put it in the back garden so I could take a pretty picture - thinking he would agree how good it looks and make me one - hah - no such luck. Unfortunately, he is so busy making them for everyone else, I'm last on the list. ... One day though!

The first week back at the shop - did some overhauling of all the fabrics and added more to the reduced area - lots of new fabrics arriving soon.

Jane was in all week and we both had fun doing lots of sewing. There are new photos of Jane's bag (for all the Tuesday night ladies) with lots of quilting and beading, and my new quilt - a great little retro style quilt with hexagons for the youngsters. The pattern and kit will be up and running shortly. I took curtain fabric into the shop thinking I would be able to make them up (for my husband's TV room) - the fabric has been hanging around home for over 10 years and I still really like it. I didn't get into making them, so Jane took over - bless her heart. I owe her one.....

Most of the classes will be back this week and we have lots for them to sink their teeth into. Hopefully they won't mind me taking photos and posting them here on my blog - then their friends and family can see what they get up to in class. And also see what all the other classes get up to! And all the yummy treats the ladies cook and bring in. Keep it up! Blow the diet!

- the two dogs play together and take turns in each others yard. I couldn't resist adding this photo - they both love playing in the fountain at Banjo's house. Needless to say, Toby came home quite wet - the best thing is they both sleep really well at night.

Heartwarming Blog

I have just added a blog to my list - Vintage, pretty & shabby - please read this. It is heartwarming.

None of us know what is ahead and we can only hope we have the strength to deal with the not so good things. In our Tuesday sewing class, we have this wonderful lady Gaby - she does amazing hand patching and embroidery. Down to the smallest hexagons. A few weeks ago she was diagnosed with cancer - is now undergoing intensive chemo, and is keeping a lovely bright smile on her face. We are all thinking of her and praying for her and her family. We miss her on Tuesdays - and can't wait to have her back.

How time flies

Well - here we are in 2009. How quickly the time is going - 2008 just disappeared. Maybe this year I will be more organised, time will slow down, and I can spend more time with friends. My husband keeps telling me the only person who can make 48 hours in one day is God..... I hope he listens to me and probably a lot of other people and grants us this wish.

I have been reading Blogs today - there are so many wonderful and creative people in this world. I think I can become addicted to these. Amongst all the other things I am addicted to. It's back to work on Monday after a short break. Mostly laid up with a heavy cold. I know that the first week back at the shop will be hectic with organising projects for the coming year.

As soon as I have a few starting projects, they will be posted here. Don't forget to check out Chris Jurd's Blog (right hand side - Patchwork Fundamentals). Chris has some great projects lined up for this year.

This has to be one of my favourite little bags. The pattern for this has been so popular. I have made it in many colours - either vintage or retro style. Don't think I'll ever tire of this one.

Good morning. Here I am - blogging. Christmas is over - how fast did it come and go. Now I guess all the chocolates and cake must be eaten so as not to go to waste.

New Year is approaching so that means by not letting the choclate and cake go to waste, it has now gone to waist so DIET is the key word for Jan 1.

The photos of my family weddings were too good not to let everyone see. The fashions have changed so much over the years, and it's interesting to have a record of these. I would love to know what my grandparents and great grandparents would think of computers today. Probably as scary as we would be if we went back and didn't have all the mod-cons we have now.

There is also a photo of my other Grandmother. She wasn't around when I was an adult, but during my childhood I can remember sitting in her sewing room (full of sewing machines, and skyhigh with fabrics, laces, trims, sequins, etc) finding offcuts to make dolls clothes. I must have picked a lot up from her and stored it away for later. Anyway, I wonder what she would think of what I do now.

Will have some lovely photos shortly of all the new projects we will be working on in 2009 in the shop. And probably some projects which are just for fun.. I'm just looking forward to getting the new Amy Butler fabrics in the new year. What can I make??
